The fragrance, as a moment
A spark.
A warm breeze.
The night ahead.
Follow the fragrance
as the evening unfolds.

The sea below.
The evening ahead.
You stand on a terrace above the water as the sun slips behind the rooftops. The stone beneath your hand still holds the heat of the day. Below, the shore catches a last wash of rose; somewhere behind you, shutters open onto the evening.
A bowl of tangerines rests on the table. You lift a piece of peel, and its brightness catches in the warm air. A trace of pink pepper and resin seems to drift up from the narrow streets. You turn towards the sound of voices and follow the steps down.
II Through the bazaar
A turn in the passage.
A different world.
The passage narrows beneath a faded awning. In the bazaar, open sacks of ginger and nutmeg sit in the amber light of a doorway. Someone folds a length of cloth; a cup touches its saucer. The stone underfoot has cooled, but the air is still warm with spice.
You take another turn. A rose leans over a garden wall, its petals moving in the breeze above your head. The voices fall behind you. For a moment there is only the rustle of leaves and a strip of deepening sky between the roofs.
III Back by the water
The terrace is quiet now.
By the time you return, the sea has turned almost black. A few windows glow along the opposite shore. You pull a chair towards the low wall and sit with your hands around a small cup, listening to the water reach the stones below.
The terrace wall is warm against your shoulder. In the garden beneath it, damp earth, patchouli leaves and moss gather in the cool night air. The last voices fade into the streets. You stay a little longer, until the lights across the water begin to blur into their reflections.
