The fragrance, as a moment
Violet dusk.
White flowers.
The quiet shore.
Let the evening
unfold around you.

The day ends
at the water’s edge.
You leave your sandals at the end of the path and step onto the sand. It is warm on the surface, cooler where your feet sink in. Ahead, the sun rests low over the water, drawing a narrow copper line towards the shore. Behind you, the palms move against a sky already turning violet.
From an open doorway comes the small sound of a cup being set down, then a breath of freshly crushed cardamom. Pale irises in a pot catch the last light beside the steps. You turn towards the shore and follow the waterline, letting each small wave erase the footprints behind you.
II The garden after dusk
White flowers
in the deepening blue.
A little further along, a low garden wall meets the beach. Jasmine has grown over its edge, its white flowers still visible after the leaves have darkened. You slow down beneath the branches. The air here is warmer, sheltered from the breeze off the water.
Beyond the wall, the long petals of ylang-ylang move almost imperceptibly. A lamp comes on inside the house, laying a rectangle of light across the path. Somewhere in the garden, a chair is drawn back. You pass the open gate and follow a narrow way between the palms, towards a pale curve hanging in the shadows.
III Between the palms
The shore grows quiet.
A hammock hangs between two palms, just above the sand. You sit at its edge, then lift your feet and lean back. The cloth takes your weight and moves once, slowly, from side to side. Through the leaves overhead, the first stars have begun to appear.
The light from the house is out of sight now. A fold of linen rests against your wrist, carrying a soft, close warmth. Below, a wave spreads a thin silver edge over the sand, then draws it back into the dark. You listen for the next one. The hammock barely moves.
