The fragrance, as a moment
Warm stone.
Wild green.
Open water.
Take the path
beyond the familiar.

The stone is warm.
The air is moving.
The path climbs out of the valley, loose stones shifting beneath your boots. On one side, dry grass catches at your ankles; on the other, the hillside falls away into a pale morning haze. You stop at a bend and rest your hand on a boulder already warm in the sun.
From your bag, you take an orange. A fine spray rises as you break the peel. The breeze lifts it away, carrying a dry, peppery warmth from the slope, with a sharper trace that recalls fresh-cut ginger. Ahead, the trail disappears into a stand of trees. You shoulder the bag and keep walking.
II Through the green
The light breaks
between the leaves.
Under the eucalyptus, the ground darkens. Long strips of bark lie across the path, and narrow leaves turn silver in the wind above you. Your steps grow quieter on the soft earth. For a while, the only sounds are the branches moving and the loose strap of your bag brushing your coat.
The trail opens into a hollow sheltered from the wind. Low herbs grow between the stones; you brush a basil leaf with your fingers, then pass a cluster of broad violet leaves in the shade. Beyond them, the grass begins again. As you climb the last few steps, the path turns. Through a break in the trees, a ribbon of blue catches the light far below.
III Where the land ends
Below you,
the tide comes in.
You emerge onto the ridge. The sea stretches out below, darkening where the clouds pass over it. A narrow track leads down through the long grass to a shelf of rock. You follow it slowly, one hand against the hillside, until the sound of the water is louder than the wind.
At the bottom, you sit on a flat stone and set your bag beside you. Roots hold the earth above the shore; moss fills the cooler cracks behind your shoulder. The air has the dry warmth of roots and a faint saltiness; a little spray cools the back of your hand. A wave reaches the rock below your feet, withdraws, and returns. You stay to watch the next one.
